Hoffellsjökull Viewpoint

Overview

Hoffellsjökull Viewpoint is the quick-win stop for a sweeping look over the Hoffellsjökull glacier tongue and its iceberg-dotted lagoon. The ice here is often streaked with dark debris, so the scene feels raw and textural compared to glossier lagoons. It’s a short stroll with a huge payoff and, because it’s off the main tourist circuit, you’ll likely share it with just a handful of people.

Getting There

From Route 1 near Höfn, it’s about 3 km on pavement to Hoffell guesthouse, then roughly 4 km on a gravel track to the glacier car park. That last stretch can be rough and may deteriorate during snowmelt; a 4WD is recommended. If the track looks sketchy—or if sections are closed—you can park earlier (by the guesthouse) and walk the remaining distance.

The Short Walk (O1)

The signed O1 path covers about 0.5 km out-and-back, takes around 10 minutes, and climbs roughly 15 m. Despite being short, it’s officially rated Challenging due to uneven moraine, potentially wet or slippery sections, and changeable weather. Treat it like a real hike: watch your footing and give yourself time.

What You’ll See

From the viewpoint, you’re looking down on the glacier tongue, its lagoon, and small icebergs drifting below. It’s a front-row seat to ongoing glacial retreat—interpretive information in the area highlights how dramatically the ice has pulled back in recent decades. On calm summer days, you may notice bird activity around the water.

Safety Essentials

Stay well back from the glacier and the lagoon edge—calving ice and unstable banks are dangerous. Wear sturdy footwear with grip and bring layers and rain/wind protection. Conditions shift fast in glacial forefields; check local advisories before you go. If you’re tempted by longer routes here, know that some (like the Hoffell–Hoffellsjökull line) are unmarked and suited to experienced hikers only.

There’s a car park at the glacier, but no confirmed toilets on site. An informative display about the glacier is found at Hoffell guesthouse down the paved road. Plan food, water, and restroom stops in advance.

From the same area you’ll find other marked hikes with additional viewpoints. There’s also an unmarked, challenging route from Hoffell guesthouse along the mountainside toward the glacier for those confident with navigation. Post-hike, the Hoffell hot tubs sit a short drive from the glacier parking area.

Best Time to Visit

Aim for dry weather and daylight—both the gravel approach and the rocky forefield are friendliest then. This spot rarely feels crowded, so you don’t need to game the schedule; just pick a clear window for visibility and wind protection for steadier photos.
