Skaftárstofa is the park’s western gateway just off Route 1 by Kirkjubæjarklaustur. It serves both Vatnajökull National Park (Lakagígar/Laki area) and the local municipality, so it’s the place to get up-to-date road, weather, and area info before heading inland.

Getting There

Doors open daytime only. From mid‑May the hours run roughly 08:30–17:30; otherwise it’s typically 09:00–17:00. Aim for opening (9–10 AM) or late afternoon to dodge the midday swell, when bus groups are most common. If you want to catch a film, ask about showtimes when you arrive.
