Overview
Skaftárstofa is the park’s western gateway just off Route 1 by Kirkjubæjarklaustur. It serves both Vatnajökull National Park (Lakagígar/Laki area) and the local municipality, so it’s the place to get up-to-date road, weather, and area info before heading inland.
Inside, expect a modern, thoughtfully designed space with friendly staff who know the region’s geology and roads inside out. It’s a genuinely worthwhile Ring Road pause—use the break to refill water, grab a coffee, and get your bearings.

- Life with Nature: the center’s core exhibition, focused on living alongside Iceland’s powerful landscape.
- Springtrip (Iceland Glaciological Society): history of glacier expeditions, cabins, and research.
- Films: bite-size documentaries on the 1783–84 Laki eruption and the 2011 Grímsvötn eruption, plus an overview of the park’s western reaches. Plan a little time—presentations are shown a couple of times a day, not continuously.

Getting There
You’ll see it at Sönghóll right off the Ring Road by Kirkjubæjarklaustur—zero detour driving east or west. Note this is different from Skaftafell’s visitor center further east; this one anchors the Laki-side of the park.
Best Time to Visit
Doors open daytime only. From mid‑May the hours run roughly 08:30–17:30; otherwise it’s typically 09:00–17:00. Aim for opening (9–10 AM) or late afternoon to dodge the midday swell, when bus groups are most common. If you want to catch a film, ask about showtimes when you arrive.
Good to Know
- In summer 2025, rangers organized daily guided walks from the center (around late morning); ask about current offerings if you’re passing through in peak season.
