About Snæfellskáli Hut

Snæfellsskáli Hut is the highland basecamp beneath Mt. Snæfell on the park’s northeast side—part ranger outpost, part hikers’ hub. It’s a classic Icelandic highland hut: simple, warm, and purpose-built for big days on the plateau. In season, rangers are on site to share current conditions, route advice, and help manage both the hut and the adjacent small campground.

Best time to go

Reaching the hut is part of the adventure. Access is via interior highland roads that are typically 4×4-only and open seasonally; the F909 track usually opens in early July. When snow covers the ground, the hut can be reached by skis or snowmobile. Rangers are generally present from when the road opens until around September 20.

Facilities

Expect sleeping-bag style lodging for about 45 people, plus a small on-site campground. In summer, the hut provides running water, cooking facilities, hot showers, and water-flush toilets. Outside summer, amenities scale down, so always verify what’s available for your dates and bring what you need.
