Overview

A quick climb delivers you to the atmospheric America Hill Great House Ruins, perched above the north shore with wide views over Maho, Cinnamon, and Francis Bays. It’s one of the island’s best effort-to-reward stops: a photogenic historic site plus a postcard panorama.

The Hike

Start near Cinnamon Bay and follow the Cinnamon Bay Trail to the signed spur for America Hill. Expect a short but steady ascent—roughly 1.0–1.8 miles round-trip with about 400–500 feet of gain. The first stretch is steep and rocky/rooty, then you’ll wind up shaded switchbacks (there’s even a stone bench partway). Most hikers spend 45–60 minutes round-trip, longer if you linger for photos. Trails can be slippery after showers, so wear grippy shoes. There are no services at the ruins; use restrooms at the beach area and carry water.

What You’ll See

At the top, the great house shell frames sweeping views across the turquoise bays, with sightlines that can stretch toward Waterlemon Cay and Tortola on clear days. In winter, vines and pink blooms can blanket the area—expect butterflies and plenty of buzzing bees when the flowers peak.

History Snapshot

The estate traces to the early 18th century and once included a great house with neoclassical details, a separate cookhouse, cistern, servants’ quarters, and yard walls. The site has lived many lives—from plantation era through early 20th‑century transitions. Hurricanes over the decades took a toll, leaving the evocative ruins you see today. There’s long-circulating local lore about Prohibition‑era rum‑running, too.

Wildlife & Nature

The shaded climb passes through tropical forest with bay rum trees and palms. Mosquitoes can be pesky, especially after rain—bring repellent. Sunrise walkers occasionally spot deer near the ruins.

Best Time to Visit

Go in the morning for cooler temps and flattering light (sunrise is magic). Late morning still works for photography but brings more heat. Avoid right after rain if traction is a concern. Pair it with beach time at Cinnamon or Maho once you’re back down.

Safety Notes

Enjoy the ruins from a safe distance—sections are unstable. Don’t climb walls or enter compromised areas. The trail is short but steep; sturdy footwear, water, sun protection, and bug spray make it much more pleasant.

Pros

  • Sweeping north-shore bay views from evocative hilltop ruins
  • Short, shaded climb with a big payoff

Cons

  • Steep, rocky footing that gets slick after rain
  • Ruins are unstable—view only, do not climb

Tips

  • Start early for cooler temps and the best light at the overlook.
  • Wear grippy closed-toe shoes; the first stretch is steep and slick when wet.
  • Bring plenty of water and bug repellent; there’s no water or shade at the top.
  • Use the beach-area restrooms before hiking; there are no facilities on the trail.
  • Enjoy the ruins from a distance and obey any closure signs—don’t climb.
