Francis Bay Trail

Francis Bay Trail is a 0.8-mile loop from the upper Francis Bay Sugar Factory access, past the Mary Point Great House, through dry tropical forest to Francis Bay Beach, then around the salt pond on a boardwalk and back along a short road connection. It’s a good choice when you want a little history, beach time, and bird habitat without a long hike. Plan about an hour; the walk can take 30 to 90 minutes or longer if you stop at the ruins, beach, and pond.

The section between the factory access and beach has rocky, uneven footing and a steep pitch. The boardwalk is level and was built for wheelchair and stroller access, but that doesn’t make the full circuit accessible. If you mainly want the salt-pond platforms, use the beach end for the easier boardwalk approach and treat it as a shorter visit.

The route passes the ruins of the Mary Point Estate’s Great House, above the salt pond. The old estate structure is the trail’s main historical stop; from there the route drops toward the beach before turning back around the pond. The dry tropical forest and salt pond offer a chance to watch birds, though sightings are never guaranteed.

Two viewing platforms give you a closer look at the salt pond and its mangroves. The second reaches farther over the water, so it’s the one to linger at if you want a pond-centered view. The complete route crosses Francis Bay Beach; dogs are allowed on park trails only on a leash no longer than six feet, but aren’t allowed on beaches, so this loop isn’t a pet walk.
