Casareto Summer Cabin is a restored 1930s log cabin on Crane Lake’s north shore, just inside Voyageurs National Park. It’s a small landmark with a bigger story than its footprint. The building and grounds have been restored, while interpretive media are still planned. Access is the unresolved part: today’s landing and whether you can enter the cabin aren’t clearly published, so check with park staff before planning around either.

Jake Casareto found Crane Lake in 1933 while between college and starting a dental practice. He bought level ground beside a sandy beach for its scenery and fishing; the cabin took shape the next year for $500. A dock and well followed, then outbuildings, walks and flower gardens. In its early form, it was a one-bedroom log cabin with low doorways and a screened porch.

The north shore sits on a canoe route Ojibwe people and voyageurs used between Lake Vermilion and Sand Point Lake. Archaeological evidence points to more than 6,500 years of habitation around Crane Lake, and a map from around 1820 shows a North West Company post near the cabin. The family’s summer retreat is one chapter in a much longer shoreline story.

Take in the settingThe sandy beach is part of the cabin’s story as much as the logs are.

The sandy beach is part of the cabin’s story as much as the logs are. If you can reach the shore, include a strip of sand in front of the green-roofed cabin to show why this was a summer retreat. The old dock and well are historical details, not confirmed visitor facilities.
