Trail guide
Tilson Connector Trail is a 2.5-mile out-and-back from Rainy Lake Visitor Center to the first junction with the nearby Tilson Bay/Tilson Creek trail network. Follow the paved Rainy Lake Recreation Trail west, then continue on dirt through boreal forest to the Blue Trail connection. The mapped line is about 1.27 miles each way; budget roughly 1¼ hours for the return walk. An older 0.93-mile one-way figure is also in circulation, but it doesn't match the complete walk from the visitor-center area to the junction. Stop at the Blue Trail if you're doing this connector only; the longer ski-trail loops are a separate outing.
The approach follows the paved Rainy Lake Recreation Trail. The connector itself is a dirt path with uneven roots and rocks. A 2019 update added about 400 feet of level, dry track through boreal forest to bypass a wetland. The overall profile is gentle; the rough footing matters more than climbing. This is a practical link into another trail system, not a scenic loop with a documented overlook.
Once enough snow accumulates, the connector is groomed for classic cross-country skiing. Pets aren't allowed on this route. The state trails beyond the junction are a separate system with their own route choices and rules, and their miles aren't included here.
