Lineham Falls

This is a moderate, out‑and‑back hike to a dramatic waterfall viewpoint tucked beneath Mount Lineham and Mount Blakiston. It’s about 5.2 miles total (8.4–8.5 km) with roughly 1,150 feet (≈350 m) of gain, starting from a signed trailhead along Akamina Parkway. The path is maintained and straightforward, but it climbs steadily and ends at a “Trail Ends” sign with a full view of the falls and cirque—there’s no sanctioned route to the base.

What you’ll see: a classic Waterton progression from shady conifer forest to open meadows and an alpine basin. The trail shadows Lineham Creek with occasional cascades before the headwall and falls come into view. Expect big mountain backdrops—Mount Lineham, Mount Blakiston, Ruby Ridge, Buchanan Ridge—and early‑summer wildflowers. Keep an eye on the high ridges for mountain goats.

The payoff is the setting: a high-walled, glacially carved basin with the waterfall pouring off a hanging valley. In late spring and early summer the falls are at their most powerful thanks to snowmelt; by late summer they’re less thunderous but the hike remains scenic. Footing is mostly dirt and gravel with some rocky sections near the end. Most hikers take 2–3 hours round‑trip.

Important limitation: the official trail stops roughly 500 m short of the falls. Primitive side paths continue, but they’re unmaintained and hazardous. Parks Canada treats off‑trail travel toward the lakes or base of the falls as a hazardous activity that can require a permit—don’t be tempted unless you know exactly what you’re doing and have authorization.

Tips: wear sturdy boots, bring enough water and snacks (no facilities on trail), and carry bear spray while making noise—this is active bear country. Weather shifts fast; pack layers and rain protection. For photos, the broad cirque viewpoint at the end is the shot.

Best time to hike: late spring to early summer for peak flow and wildflowers; summer into early fall for reliably dry trail and big views. Winter and early spring are not recommended due to snow, ice, and avalanche risk.
