Overview
This unassuming roadside stop marks the 1902 Lineham Discovery Well No. 1—the first productive oil well in western Canada. It didn’t boom for long, but it sparked Alberta’s petroleum ambitions and earned national historic recognition in 1968. The site sits in a forested valley along Cameron Creek, a quick detour as you drive the Akamina Parkway.

- Informative panels that unpack the short-lived rush and the rise and fall of “Oil City,” the rough-and-ready encampment that sprang up here.

Why It’s Interesting
The well produced a modest amount of oil before tools jammed the hole and the project was abandoned—yet it lit the fuse for exploration across Alberta. You can still trace that origin story on-site through artifacts, interpretive signs, and the nearby remnants of the early operation tucked in the woods.
How to Visit
Find it around mile 5 on the Akamina Parkway, between the road and Cameron Creek. There’s a small parking pullout/lot across the road from the monument—cross carefully on the winding roadway. It’s a perfect add-on while heading to or from Cameron Lake.
Wildlife
This stretch of forested valley can host casual sightings of deer and elk, especially in the cooler hours. It’s not a dedicated wildlife hotspot, but keep your eyes open along the creek and roadside.
Best Time to Visit
Anytime you’re driving the Akamina Parkway. Mornings and late afternoons bring softer light for photos, a quieter feel, and better odds for casual wildlife cameos. Expect a brief, uncrowded stop most days.
