Centennial Hut is a 20-bunk, serviced alpine hut on a rock outcrop at Tusk Rock, high on Franz Josef névé at about 2,400 m. The view takes in the coast below and Southern Alps peaks above. This is a base for planned mountaineering trips, not a walk-in day stop.
There is no DOC track to the hut, so you need to plan and navigate your own route. Air access is to Davis Snowfield; ground approaches are typically from Almer Hut, Pioneer Hut or Graham Saddle. Book ahead: DOC Backcountry Hut Passes and Hut Tickets aren't valid here.
There are 20 bunks with mattresses, a toilet, water tank, limited lighting, radio and charging points. Self-catering gear includes pots, plates, cutlery, a toaster, espresso maker and teapot. The tank's treatment status isn't confirmed, so bring a way to treat water.
The hut's name marks the centennial of the New Zealand Alpine Club, founded in 1891.
