Pioneer Hut is a serviced alpine hut on Pioneer Ridge above the high snowfield of Fox Glacier. It is a base for skilled climbers and ski mountaineers, including routes toward Mount Tasman. This is a planned alpine trip, not a casual stop on the glacier road.

Access is usually by air, or on foot via Graham Saddle or from nearby alpine huts. Book ahead: Backcountry Hut Passes and Tickets do not cover this hut. Weather and snow conditions can change the plan, so bring the skills and equipment for a remote alpine stay. August to March is the hut's busy season.

Bring your own setupThere are mattresses, lighting and a non-flush toilet.

There are mattresses, lighting and a non-flush toilet. The tap water is untreated and needs boiling; there is no stove, so bring food, cooking gear and fuel. The water tank can freeze in winter. Check the booking details for capacity, since hut listings give different bunk counts, and be prepared to tent or snow cave if the hut is full.
