Chancellor Hut

Chancellor Hut is a 12-bunk alpine hut on a glacial shelf more than 200 m above Fox Glacier, on the southwest face of Chancellor Ridge. At about 1,200 m, it looks toward some of New Zealand’s highest peaks. This is a specialist alpine overnight objective, not a casual walk-up stop. The public hut information gives no standard approach route, so get current route advice before planning a stay.

The 12 bunks are first-come, with no booking. Don’t set out assuming a bed will be free; this suits climbers already planning an alpine trip more than an improvised overnight stop.

Guides Alec and Peter Graham planned the hut in 1929 and built it with other mountaineers in 1930–31. Before alpine air lifts, the materials were carried up Fox Glacier piece by piece and assembled on site. It remains the oldest alpine hut on its original site and played an important part in Westland’s mountaineering, ski-mountaineering and tramping history.

The hut is a compact timber-framed building, 7.4 by 3.7 m, with corrugated-iron cladding. Its original plan separated a larger men’s cooking and sleeping room from a smaller women’s room, with a connecting door inside. That layout makes the hut a rare record of how early alpine travel was organized, and how expectations around social mixing changed.
