Overview
Chancellor Hut is a piece of living mountaineering history: a 12‑bunk alpine refuge built in 1930–31, carried in piece by piece before the helicopter era. It’s registered as a Category 2 historic place and is widely noted as the oldest alpine hut still standing in its original location.
Setting & Views
Perched around 1,200 m on the southwest face of Chancellor Ridge, roughly 200 m above the ice of Fox Glacier (Te Moeka o Tuawe), the hut looks straight onto glacier and peaks. When the weather plays along, this is one of the more atmospheric overnight spots in the area.
Inside the Hut
Expect heritage, not luxury. The simple corrugated‑iron structure shows its timber framing, with much of the patterned congoleum wall lining still intact. There are two rooms—a main cooking/sleeping space and a smaller bunk room originally designated as a “Women’s Room,” a time‑capsule detail from early alpine social norms. The original fireplace and chimney were removed in 1972. There’s no electricity.

Fees & Booking
No bookings—first come, first served. Current fees: Adult NZ$25/night; Youth (11–17) NZ$12.50/night. Backcountry Hut Passes and Tickets are not valid here.
Getting There & Safety
Most parties fly in by helicopter; on‑foot access is serious, changing alpine/glacial travel. Conditions shift quickly—always check with the DOC Fox Glacier office for up‑to‑date access, hazards, and hut status before committing.
Best Time to Visit
Summer (December–February) generally offers the most settled access. Winter and spring demand advanced alpine skills due to snow, crevasses, and avalanche hazard. Aim for clear weather windows for the views.
Why It’s Special
Few huts combine intact 1930s character with such a dramatic glacier‑edge perch. If you value history and don’t mind truly basic facilities, it’s a memorable overnight.
