This signed lookout sits on the Lake Matheson loop near Fox Glacier and earns its name. A short staircase lifts you above the lakeshore for a sweeping, mirror‑calm view toward Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman when conditions line up.
From the platform you get an elevated angle across the dark, still water of Lake Matheson—perfect for those postcard reflections of the Southern Alps. Nearby viewpoints on the circuit, like the Jetty Viewpoint and Reflection Island, offer slightly different compositions if you’re chasing the best shot.
Start from the Matheson Café car park about 6 km west of Fox Glacier village. The full Lake Matheson loop is roughly 4.4 km and takes about 1.5 hours; the track is a well‑maintained mix of forest path and boardwalk, with a short staircase up to the View of Views platform. Toilets are at the car park.
For glass‑like reflections, aim for dawn when winds are typically light. Mid‑morning often treats this specific viewpoint well, while the Jetty tends to shine at sunrise and Reflection Island later in the morning or on calm afternoons.
On a calm day it’s a slam‑dunk stop—one of the easiest ways to score that famed alpine reflection. Even without perfect glass, the loop is a gentle, pretty wander and this elevated perch is the most all‑around view on the lake.
