Lake Matheson/Te Ara Kairaumati Walk

Lake Matheson/Te Ara Kairaumati Walk is a 4.4 km loop through rainforest around a glacier-made lake, linking Jetty Lookout, View of Views and Reflection Island before returning by the eastern wetland. Allow about 1½ hours. It is an easy-to-intermediate walk and a rewarding short circuit if you want the lake and its mountain outlooks without a long climb. Most people go clockwise, though the loop works in either direction. The separate 2.4 km return walk to Jetty Lookout takes about 45 minutes and is the wheelchair-accessible option; it does not cover the full circuit.

A short approach from the car park reaches a suspension bridge over Clearwater Stream; the gravel track to Jetty Lookout then enters native rainforest. Ferns grow beneath kahikatea, rimu and tōtara. Jetty Lookout is the first place to sit by the water and look across toward the Southern Alps. The route is a well-kept, popular walk, but the forest keeps much of it shaded and the lake views come in glimpses rather than all at once.

Beyond the Jetty, the circuit follows the forested shore toward View of Views at the head of the lake. A signed side track with steps climbs to its seated lookout, where native trees frame the mountain view. Reflection Island is another short stop: steps descend to a platform over the water. From there, the return leg passes through wetland on the eastern side before rejoining the access track. Take the viewpoint spurs slowly if steps are difficult; they are part of the full experience, while the Jetty return is the shorter accessible choice.

The water is dark with organic matter from the forest floor, which gives the reflections their depth. A fine, windless dawn or dusk is your best chance of seeing the mountains mirrored clearly. A little breeze or cloud can hide the famous effect, so think of the reflection as a bonus rather than a promise. The rainforest circuit is still a pleasant walk when the peaks disappear. At Jetty Lookout or Reflection Island, compose across the dark water toward the mountain line.

Lake Matheson formed after Fox Glacier retreated from its last major advance about 14,000 years ago. The glacier spread across the coastal plain and left a basin among its deposits; water filled it as the ice withdrew. It explains why a lake this quiet sits in such a broad glacier-shaped landscape.

The lake is a customary mahinga kai, a food-gathering place for Ngāi Tahu. Long-finned eels, or tuna, are abundant here and are a treasured native species. In the surrounding forest, listen for tūī, silvereyes, fantails, kererū and tomtits. Pūkeko and paradise ducks may be seen around the wetland, along with New Zealand scaup; sightings vary, so leave room for a quiet walk as well as wildlife watching.

Parking is free, with toilets and an accessible toilet at the start; there are three marked mobility spaces. There is no drinking water on the track, and sandflies can be fierce, so bring water and repellent. Dogs are not allowed. Food and fuel are available in Fox Glacier/Weheka, a separate stop a short drive away. The walk is popular and busier in summer, from November to April.
