Overview

A short, kid‑friendly wander that feels like stepping into a mossy, fern‑filled fairyland. The Minnehaha Walk is a flat loop through lush podocarp rainforest beside a small stream, with the headline act after dark: glowworms twinkling along the banks.

Trail stats and route

It’s a loop of about 1.2 km (0.75 miles) total and typically takes around 20 minutes, though you may linger longer at night. The track starts just off State Highway 6, roughly 50 m past the Bella Vista Motel in Fox Glacier, and returns via the Te Weheka Walkway/Cycleway. Bikes are not permitted on the Minnehaha Walk.

What you’ll see

By day, expect towering tree ferns, hanging vines, gnarled trunks, and thick carpets of moss along a clear stream. After dark, switch to night‑mode: once your eyes adjust, glowworms appear like blue‑green constellations tucked into damp banks and roots. You may also hear or see nocturnal locals along the way.

Best times to go

Daytime is lovely for rainforest textures and easy family strolling. For glowworms, arrive when it’s fully dark and be patient—give your eyes 5–10 minutes to adjust. It can get busy soon after dusk; going later in the evening often means fewer people and better night vision.

Accessibility and logistics

The loop is flat and described as suitable for wheelchairs and buggies. There’s a small parking area right off SH6 near the start. The walk is free and close to town, making it an effortless after‑dinner outing.

Tips and etiquette

Bring a torch with a red light if you have one; white light and loud voices will kill the mood and can cause glowworms to stop glowing. Expect damp surfaces—wear shoes with grip. Take extra care on small bridges in the dark; some don’t have balustrades. No dogs.

If you want a different vibe

Craving a quick glacier‑view fix instead of glowworms? The Sentinel Rock Walk near Franz Josef is another short, easy option to a viewing platform, but it’s not wheelchair‑accessible and is often popular.

Pros

  • Easy, free glowworm viewing without booking a tour
  • Wheelchair and buggy friendly loop through true rainforest

Cons

  • Can be crowded just after dusk; bright torches ruin night vision
  • Very short by day unless you slow down and explore

Parking

Small signed pull‑off off SH6 about 50 m past the Bella Vista Motel in Fox Glacier; designated, wheelchair‑accessible parking available.

Caution

It’s very dark after sunset—use a red‑light torch and let eyes adjust 5–10 minutes. Small bridges may lack railings and can be slick. White lights and noise disturb glowworms. No bikes or dogs.
