Group Use Area

Overview

This semi-private Group Use Area is the park’s reservable hub for gatherings—think family reunions, scout meetups, small weddings, or team picnics—set right among the gypsum dunes. It’s simple but well thought out: shade where you need it, space to spread out, and just enough infrastructure to make a group event smooth without losing that wild-dunes feel.

What’s Here

• One large shaded pavilion with five tables (seating for about 25)
• Several individual shaded picnic tables nearby
• Two large charcoal grills (bring your own charcoal)
• A vault toilet with two stalls
• Trash receptacles (very large groups may be required to remove their own trash as a condition of the reservation)

There is no water anywhere in the Group Use Area or out on the dunefield. Plan to fill up at the visitor center before you head in, and aim for at least one gallon per person per day.

Reservations, Hours, and Permits

• Day-use only: available from 10:00 a.m. until park closing.
• Requests are processed first-come, first-served; submit up to six months in advance and no fewer than 14 working days before your date.
• A non-refundable $100 reservation fee is required and paid via Pay.gov; most requests are processed within 14 working days after payment.
• Events extending beyond normal operating hours require a separate permit.

Best Time to Use It

For comfort, plan your gathering for cooler parts of the day. Late afternoon rolling into sunset is especially pleasant and photogenic on the dunes. If you’re eyeing an evening vibe, remember that standard reservations end at park closing—anything after hours needs a permit.

Wildlife and Atmosphere

Most wildlife here is crepuscular or nocturnal, so dusk is your best chance to notice tracks and subtle movement while you’re wrapping up a late-day gathering. Expect blindingly bright, reflective sand—bring sunglasses and brimmed hats.

Planning Tips

• Check for occasional road closures due to missile range tests before you set your date; closures can temporarily halt access to Dunes Drive.
• If you’re bringing a crowd, consider sledding breaks—plastic saucer sleds and wax are popular and can turn a group meet-up into a mini adventure.

Good to Know

Parking accommodates cars and larger vehicles. Backcountry overnights inside the dunes are not available right now, so keep plans strictly to daytime use here.
