Primrose Picnic Area

Primrose is one of White Sands National Park's three public picnic areas, about six miles from the Visitor Center. It's an easy place to pause for a meal mid-drive: the tables sit in the dunefield under metal shade canopies, with an elevated grill at every table.

Tables are first come, first served; the park says there are typically plenty. Some tables are accessible, and Primrose has one accessible picnic shelter. A nearby restroom building has two wheelchair-accessible vault toilets and no running water, with accessible parking directly in front. If you want packaged food or bottled drinks, pick them up at the Visitor Center Trading Post before heading into the dunes.

The curved aluminum shelters were designed for White Sands by National Park Service architect Lyle E. Bennett, drawing inspiration from Frank Lloyd Wright. They shade visitors and break the wind, and can be moved as sand encroaches. It's a practical stop with a bit of park-specific design history built into it.

White plates and napkins can disappear against the gypsum sand, and wind can carry loose paper into the dunes. Bright reusable tableware is easier to spot, and bagging your trash keeps it from blowing away.
