Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

  • Sturdy shoes. The path can be uneven, and it gets slippery after rain.
  • Rain gear, since the whole visit is outdoors with no shelter at the ruin.
  • Early morning or late afternoon gives the best raking light across the carvings, and you have a much better chance of having the place to yourself.

Getting there

The priory sits east of the main Glendalough monastic city, on the south bank of the Glendasan River, and it is not a drive-up stop. You reach it on foot along the Green Road and a woodland path, an inclined gravel walkway through birch trees for the final stretch. It is a short walk rather than a hike, but there is a steep and uneven section, so mobility suitability is limited and wheelchairs and buggies will struggle.

More about Saint Saviour's Priory

Why it stands outSaint Saviour's Priory, usually just called St Saviour's, was founded as an Augustinian house…

Saint Saviour's Priory, usually just called St Saviour's, was founded as an Augustinian house in the middle of the twelfth century, and it carries some of the finest Romanesque carving anywhere in this valley. Tradition links its foundation to Saint Laurence O'Toole, who was abbot at Glendalough in the years before 1162, though the connection is an attribution rather than settled fact. What is clear is the quality of the stonework: chevrons, spirals, knotwork, human and animal heads, and a roll moulding finished with a dragon's head.

What you actually seeBoth the arch and the east window were rebuilt in the 1870s.

Both the arch and the east window were rebuilt in the 1870s. The ruin was close to collapse when it came into State care in 1875, and the restoration the following year stabilised the walls and worked carved stones recovered from the rubble back into the fabric. Some of that reassembly is best understood as informed guesswork, which is part of the site's honest story rather than a flaw in it.

  • A modest nave and chancel church in a grassy clearing, with a compartment along the north side of the nave that seems to have had an upper floor.
  • The carved chancel arch, the centrepiece of the site, framing the view into the chancel.
  • The east window, whose two light arrangement is unlike anything else in Ireland, with carving worth looking at closely from both inside and out.
  • Wooded slopes on all sides, which is a big part of why the place feels so still.
Honest drawbacksIt is quieter and far less visited than the main Glendalough complex, which is the appeal, but…

It is quieter and far less visited than the main Glendalough complex, which is the appeal, but it also means there is no staff or visitor centre at the ruin and no staffed interpretation at the building. The remains are low and modest in scale, so if you are expecting a large abbey you will be underwhelmed. Come for the carving and the solitude, and give yourself time to look at the arch and window properly.
