“Up ahead is Calcite Springs Overlook, a short stop for an unusual mix of hot-spring geology and river cliffs. I'd give it ten minutes for the walk to the viewing platforms and a look across the canyon.”

A quick canyon stopThis roadside viewpoint in Yellowstone’s Tower-Roosevelt area looks down the Yellowstone River…

This roadside viewpoint in Yellowstone’s Tower-Roosevelt area looks down the Yellowstone River canyon, where a pale, mineral-stained slope meets dark basalt and pine-covered walls. It’s a worthwhile short stop if you like geology or want a different look at the river canyon; allow a few minutes for the walk to the platforms. The hydrothermal area itself is closed to visitors, so stay on the overlook side of the canyon.

Getting to the viewThe pullout is on the Grand Loop Road just south of Tower Junction.

The pullout is on the Grand Loop Road just south of Tower Junction. A short loop leads out from the road to viewing platforms; reports differ about stairs and step-free access, so confirm access details with the park if they matter to your visit. The Yellowstone River Picnic Area Trail is a separate route on the opposite rim and gives another view into Calcite Springs.

The road through Tower Junction from Gardiner to Cooke City is generally open year-round, while most interior park roads close to regular vehicles from early November through late April. If you are coming from the east or south side, check current road conditions before crossing the park.

Underground fractures let oil seep toward the surface, and the heat can liquefy sulfur, which sometimes oozes out. Once sulfur meets the air it darkens, so a dark patch could be sulfur or oil. The name comes from the area’s milky calcite crystals; honey-colored barite and yellow sulfur crystals are also found there. Those minerals are in the closed hydrothermal area, not a reason to leave the overlook.

A line of dark, column-shaped basalt caps pale stream gravel on the opposite canyon wall. The columns formed as old lava cooled and cracked, a volcanic story alongside the hot-spring activity. Their straight edges stand out against the softer, pale slope below.

Watch the river slopesLook across the river for bighorn sheep on the steep hillsides.

Look across the river for bighorn sheep on the steep hillsides. They are seen here sometimes, but a sighting is never guaranteed. For a photo, keep the river bend in the lower part of the frame; it gives the canyon depth and shows how the pale spring slope sits between the forested walls.
