Wawona Point

Overview

Wawona Point caps the top of Mariposa Grove with a sweeping overlook of Wawona Meadow, the South Fork of the Merced River country, and Wawona Dome. It’s a classic “earn-your-view” destination: not flashy on the way up, but the payoff at the top is wide‑open Sierra scenery and surprising quiet.

The Hike

Plan on roughly 7–7.75 miles round‑trip, about 1,200 feet of gain, and 4–6 hours. The route starts from the Mariposa Grove Arrival Area, then follows a wide, relatively smooth historic road/trail. Expect a steady, consistent grade. Some hikers find the service‑road feel a bit monotonous, but most agree the summit view is worth every step. Along the way you pass named giants like the Bachelor & Three Graces, the Faithful Couple, and the Clothespin Tree.

What You’ll See

From the top, you look straight over Wawona Meadow and the South Fork Merced drainage, with Wawona Dome anchoring the skyline. On a clear day, you can see for miles. The overlook area can feel airy and a bit windy—another reason it stays less crowded.

Wildlife & Meadow Notes

The meadow below has been actively restored after decades of altered hydrology from grazing, a 1918 golf course, an old airstrip, and CCC drainage ditches. That work has helped bring back wet‑meadow plants like willows and sedges, and it supports sensitive species, including willow flycatcher and great gray owl. As always, give wildlife space and keep food secured—this is bear country.

Geology Snapshot

Those domes and broad valleys are classic Sierra Nevada granite—Cretaceous plutons uplifted and later sculpted by glaciation. The strong, unlayered granitic rock is why Yosemite’s domes and cliffs stand so bold.

Logistics

• Access/parking: Park at the Mariposa Grove Welcome Plaza and ride the shuttle when it’s running, or hike in from there. There’s no vehicle access or parking at Wawona Point itself.
• Facilities: No restrooms or water at the overlook. Restrooms are available at the Welcome Plaza/shuttle area. Carry all the water you’ll need.
• Seasonal conditions: Expect lingering snow/ice in spring—traction can help in April. It can be windy at the top.

Best Time to Visit

Go early for the most solitude and cooler temps. Weekdays see fewer hikers than weekends. Check current park alerts for shuttle operations and any peak‑hours reservation requirements during busy holiday periods. Clear days make the views pop; afternoon often brings warmer light on the meadow below.
