More about Yosemite History Center

An outdoor history campusThe Yosemite History Center is an outdoor museum of historic buildings gathered near the Wawona…

The Yosemite History Center is an outdoor museum of historic buildings gathered near the Wawona Covered Bridge. It suits a short stop if you want more than a bridge photo: wander among cabins, offices, a barn, the blacksmith shop, old wagons and interpretive signs. Many buildings came from elsewhere in the park and were moved here in the 1950s and ’60s, so think of it as a collection rather than a village preserved in place.

Plan around the groundsYou can walk the grounds and read the signs even when building interiors are closed.

You can walk the grounds and read the signs even when building interiors are closed. Summer may bring indoor exhibits in the Chinese Laundry and Acting Superintendent’s Office, horse-drawn wagon rides and occasional blacksmith demonstrations. Check the current Yosemite Guide if one of those is the reason you’re coming; the schedule changes.

Parking near the Wawona Store and Pioneer Gift Shop is the best access, with an accessible restroom nearby. The paved approach includes an 8.1% slope, and paths within the center are dirt; there is no designated accessible parking. Pets aren’t allowed for this activity. There’s no separate activity fee, though park entrance fees may apply.

The bridge and the roadThe covered bridge was the first step in creating the History Center.

The covered bridge was the first step in creating the History Center. Its crossing began as an uncovered bridge funded by Galen Clark; Henry Washburn completed the road in 1875, and the bridge was covered a few years later. The approach also connects the campus to the road-building story: about 300 Chinese immigrant workers built 27 miles of the original Wawona Road in four and a half months, and much of today’s road follows that route.

The people behind the buildingsThe Chinese Laundry was built in 1917 for the Wawona Hotel.

The Chinese Laundry was built in 1917 for the Wawona Hotel. Chinese immigrant workers including Ah Yee and Ah Wee laundered hotel linens there from 1918 to 1933. A cabin moved from Big Meadow belonged to George Anderson, a Scottish immigrant, blacksmith and trail builder who became the first known person to summit Half Dome. Look for the artist’s bungalow too: Norwegian-born painter Chris Jorgensen built a Yosemite Valley home and studio after visiting in 1898.

Photograph the campusThe covered bridge is the defining shot.

The covered bridge is the defining shot. Try it from either approach, then include the Gray Barn or old wagons in another frame to show how the bridge sits within the larger historic collection.
