Taft Point Trail

Overview

A quick out-and-back with an outsized payoff, Taft Point serves up wide-open views over Yosemite Valley, including El Capitan and Yosemite Falls. It’s about 2.2 miles total with a modest 200 feet of net descent out to the point (and the climb back). Many visitors find the experience more natural and less fenced-in than neighboring viewpoints, but that raw edge is exactly why you must be careful here.

Highlights & Route

The path rolls gently through shady forest and small meadows before the landscape suddenly drops away onto granite slabs at the rim. Along the way, you’ll pass the famous Fissures—narrow fractures cleaving the rim with dramatic vertical drops. From the point, you’ll look down on El Capitan and across to Yosemite Falls, a perspective few roadside overlooks can match.

Logistics

Trailhead parking is on Glacier Point Road, shared with Sentinel Dome, with a small main lot and overflow nearby. It fills fast and roadside spillover is common, so arrive early or come late in the day. Pit toilets and food-storage lockers are at the trailhead. Access is only possible when Glacier Point Road is open—typically late spring through fall—so always check seasonal status before you go. Standard park entry fees apply, and peak-season day-use reservations may be required in some years.

Safety

There are no railings at Taft Point. Keep well back from cliff edges and the Fissures, mind your footing on granite (especially if wet or icy), and keep kids close. You’ll be hiking around 7,500–7,700 feet; that short uphill back can feel punchy at altitude. If you develop headache, nausea, or unusual fatigue, take it seriously and head down. Early summer can bring wet patches or shallow stream crossings; storms can roll in quickly—if you hear thunder, leave the rim. Sunset is spectacular, but the forested return is dark; bring a headlamp. No pets on this trail.

Best Time to Hike & Tips

Go early for solitude or late for golden light; both help with parking. Bring water and bug spray (mosquitoes can pop at dusk). Pair it with Sentinel Dome via the Pohono Trail for a superb half-day loop if you want more views without a huge time commitment.
