Poulter Hut

Overview

Poulter Hut is a no-fuss, 10‑bunk DOC backcountry hut tucked up the Poulter valley. Built in 2003 at about 677 m, it’s the kind of place you come for a quiet night by the fire and a simple roof over your head, not frills.

Facilities

Expect classic Standard Hut comforts: mattresses on the bunks, a closed fire/wood stove for heating, a long‑drop toilet, and a roof‑fed water tank. It’s basic but well set up for an overnight if you arrive prepared.

Getting There (don’t mix it up with Trust/Poulter)

There are two huts in this valley: Poulter Hut (10 bunks) and Trust/Poulter Hut (6 bunks). Poulter Hut can be reached via the Minchin Pass Route—plan and navigate carefully. If you’re eyeing approaches that rely on the Mt White Station easement up the Poulter River, know that this easement is closed annually from September 20 to December 10; during that window, access is via Casey Saddle or Binser Saddle.

Fees and How to Pay

This is a DOC Standard Hut. Fees per night: Adult $10, Youth (5–17) $5, Children (0–4) free. Bring Standard Hut Tickets for each night and drop them in the hut honesty box, or use a valid Backcountry Hut Pass (covers most Standard/Serviced huts for 12 months).

Safety and Conditions

Rivers in the Poulter/Casey area can spike fast after rain—build in a weather buffer and be ready to turn back. Carry the right map (NZTopo50 BV21) and navigate using the NZTM coordinates if needed.

Best Time to Visit

Aim for periods outside the Sep 20–Dec 10 easement closure if your route would use the Mt White access. Whenever you go, pick a stable weather window to avoid high river levels and make the most of the wood stove evenings.
