River country and farm access

The final approach from the old Casey Hut site crosses the Casey River and follows a 4WD track across open river flats for about an hour and a half. The wider access crosses Mt White Station, with a locked gate, stock and farm activity; DOC says access may close during parts of the year. Check the route information before setting out, and don't cross a flooded river or one without safe entry and exit points.

Trust/Poulter Hut is a standard six-bunk backcountry hut in the upper Poulter Valley of Arthur's Pass National Park. It is a planned overnight destination, not a quick roadside stop. DOC estimates six to eight hours from Andrews Shelter, and mountain bikers may ride as far as the hut from the old Casey Hut site.

What you'll find insideThere are six bunks, mattresses, heating and a non-flush toilet.

There are six bunks, mattresses, heating and a non-flush toilet. Water comes from a stream, not a treated tap, so bring a way to treat it. The hut is first come, first served; overnight stays still require hut tickets or a Backcountry Hut Pass.

Built in 1960 as a New Zealand Forest Service S70 hut for deer cullers, it was first called Thompson Stream Hut. It is a notably intact example of that hut design, and its open fireplace remains. The current name joined Thompson Stream with an older Trust Hut that once stood farther downstream and later disappeared.
