Overview

Bealey Spur is the laid‑back way to score huge views in Arthur’s Pass. Expect a steady, mostly moderate climb through beech forest and into open tussock with constant peeks over the Waimakariri River valley. The classic turnaround is the historic Bealey Spur Hut. Plan about 7.5 miles total out‑and‑back to the hut with roughly 2.5 hours up for most walkers and a typical 4.5–5 hours round‑trip. Elevation gain is moderate (around 640 m), but the footing can be rooty and muddy after rain.

Route and highlights

From the signed car park just past the Bealey Hotel on SH73, a short walk up Cloudesley Road leads to the track. The lower forest often shelters red‑flowering mistletoe in summer, and an early cliff‑edge lookout gives a dramatic drop to Bruce Stream—keep kids close here. Higher up, the trail breaks into subalpine scrub and tussock with a few boggy patches and short boardwalks. Tarns near the ridge add bonus scenery, and the views only get broader as you climb.

Bealey Spur Hut

The destination is a basic six‑bunk musterers’ hut built in 1925. It’s a fun slice of history and a natural lunch spot. Camping nearby is possible. There’s no reliable drinking water on the way, so carry what you need and bring treatment if you plan to use hut/tarn water.

Difficulty and conditions

The track is well‑marked to the hut and suits reasonably fit walkers, but expect rough roots, occasional mud, and wind exposure higher up. In winter, snow and cold are common. This spur often stays drier than Arthur’s Pass village during nor’west rain, which makes it a smart Plan B when other tracks are sodden.

Extensions beyond the hut

Strong parties often continue up the spur to informal high points like Point 1545 (roughly 15.6 km round‑trip and about 940 m total gain for that day) or Point 1581 (adds ~1.2 km and ~80 m). Beyond the hut the formed track fades, the ground gets boggier with brief rocky steps, and the weather bites harder—bring layers, navigation, and an alpine mindset.

Best time to hike

Aim for clear days for the valley panoramas. Wasps are notably active January–April. Winter can be gorgeous after snowfall but expect icy patches and bitter wind. Weekdays see fewer people; start early for quieter track time and softer light.

Logistics and tips

Park in the signed lot just past the Bealey Hotel; do not park at the turning circle at the top of Cloudesley Road. A toilet is reported at the car park. No fires in the lower car park area. Wear sturdy footwear with good grip, carry at least a liter of water per person (more if continuing past the hut), and pack warm/waterproof layers. If you push beyond the hut, take a map/GPS and a PLB.

Pros

  • Often drier than the pass during nor’west rain events
  • Historic 1925 hut makes a memorable, low‑commitment goal
  • Tarns near the ridge add scenic variety beyond the forest

Cons

  • Rooty, muddy stretches with occasional bogs after rain
  • Views are limited at the hut itself; better outlooks lie before or above

Parking

Signed car park just past the Bealey Hotel off SH73; walk up Cloudesley Road to the track start. Turning circle at the top is drop‑off only; a toilet is reported at the car park.

Caution

Cliff‑edge viewpoint above Bruce Stream—closely supervise children. Wasps are common January–April. No reliable water on the route. Expect wind and winter snow/ice higher up. Beyond the hut the route is rougher and less marked; carry layers, navigation, and a PLB. No fires in the lower car park area.
