Hector Lake Viewpoint is a roadside pullout on the Icefields Parkway north of Lake Louise, looking across forest toward Hector Lake and the Waputik Range. The water sits back from the road and is partly screened by trees, so this is a mountain-backdrop stop with a partial lake view, not a lakefront overlook. Keep it in your drive for a brief pause; if the shoreline is what you came for, use the separate Hector Lake trailhead instead.

Look through the treesDark conifers fill the foreground below the rocky, snow-streaked skyline.

Dark conifers fill the foreground below the rocky, snow-streaked skyline. For a photo, leave some of that forest in the frame: it shows the actual roadside view and gives the distant lake a sense of scale. Don't expect an open panorama of the whole lake from this stop.

Hector Lake is a glacial lake in the Waputik Range, on the Bow River and north of the Waputik Icefield. It was named for James Hector, the geologist and naturalist with the Palliser Expedition. Fine rock flour made by glaciers stays suspended in glacial lakes and contributes to their pale blue color; the shade changes with light and conditions.
