Pros & cons
PROS
- Three alpine lakes in a single jaw‑drop panorama
- Lift‑assisted access puts you in high country with little effort
CONS
- Paid gondola/chairlift required
- Ski infrastructure intrudes on the otherwise wild views
- No facilities at the chairlift summit
Park at the Sunshine Village gondola base area (Banff National Park pass required), then ride the gondola and transfer to the Standish Express chair to reach the loop.
High‑alpine weather changes fast; bring layers. No drones and no smoking on trails. Carry bear spray and check for wildlife advisories or temporary closures. No facilities at the summit—prep at the village before riding up.
This is the definition of maximum views for minimal work. Ride the Sunshine Village gondola, transfer to the Standish Express chair, and step out into high‑alpine meadows with an easy loop to a built viewing deck. The Standish Viewpoint Loop is about 2.6 miles total and typically takes 1–1.5 hours, with gentle grades and short, steeper bits. From the deck you get a rare, sweeping panorama of Rock Isle, Grizzly, and Larix Lakes ringed by jagged peaks.
Expect classic Canadian Rockies scenery: glacier‑carved U‑shaped valleys, blue alpine lakes, and in mid‑ to late summer, meadows studded with wildflowers. The setting sits within a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so stay on trail to protect fragile plants. On clear days, the 360‑degree views are outrageous; on moody days, cloud play over the ridgelines can be just as dramatic.
Access is part of the appeal. The gondola + chairlift put you at roughly 2,385 m with very little on‑foot elevation gain, making this loop a great family pick or an easy acclimatization outing. The tradeoffs: you’ll pay for lift access and you will see ski infrastructure. Crowds gather midday—this is a marquee viewpoint—so aim early or late.
Facilities are at the village, not at the summit. Use restrooms and top up water before you ride up. Weather flips fast at this altitude—bring layers even in July. Local rules are strict and enforced: no drones, no smoking on the trails, and carry bear spray (both black and grizzly bears use this area). Staff may close sections temporarily for wildlife—heed all notices.
Best time to hike: Summer only during Sunshine’s sightseeing season (typically late June through late September; for example, 2025 operations run June 27–September 21). Go at sunrise or late day for softer light, fewer people, and better photos of the three lakes. July–August is prime for wildflowers; early fall brings golden tones in the alpine.
