The Citadel Pass route is an 18 km (11.5-mile) out-and-back from the upper Sunshine Village area. Allow 6 to 7 hours for the hike, including stops. It is a difficult alpine day with a long series of rolling climbs and descents, exposed terrain, and no quick way to shorten the return.

Parking

Park at Sunshine Village, 18 km southwest of Banff at the end of Sunshine Village Access Road. Use the fee-based gondola or seasonal shuttle to reach the upper village and begin near Sunshine Mountain Lodge; check operating dates before departure.

Safety

Grizzly bear country. Carry bear spray, make noise, and keep pets leashed and under physical control. Mountain weather changes quickly, with long exposed sections, lingering or returning snow, and limited water along the route. Stay on designated trails to protect sensitive alpine habitat.

Start near Sunshine Mountain Lodge and follow the signed trail through Sunshine Meadows toward Citadel Pass. The route crosses Quartz Ridge and the Howard Douglas Lake area before reaching the pass at the Banff and Mount Assiniboine boundary. The mapped corridor is about 9.1 km one way. Beyond the pass, the trail continues toward the Simpson River valley and Mount Assiniboine; that backcountry continuation is not part of this day-hike line.
