C-Level Cirque

From Upper Bankhead Day-use Area, the route follows a continuous ascent past historic mine foundations and ventilation features before narrowing from a broad gravel approach to rutted, rocky mountain tread. The main visitor route reaches the cirque viewpoint after about 3.8 km; the full out-and-back is about 7.6 km (4.7 miles) with roughly 440 m of gain. Plan on about 3 hours, allowing extra time for the steep upper terrain and photo stops. A higher continuation beyond the mapped cirque viewpoint is a separate, more demanding option—not part of this stored line.

The destination is a bowl-shaped glacial cirque beneath Cascade Mountain, with talus and broad views across the Lake Minnewanka area. Marmots and pikas may be seen among the rocks, while bears are possible anywhere in the mountain corridor; carry bear spray and give wildlife plenty of space.

The trailhead is Upper Bankhead Day-use Area, 8.3 km northeast of downtown Banff on Lake Minnewanka Road. Parks Canada lists limited paved parking, including two accessible stalls, two gender-neutral outhouses, a picnic shelter and picnic tables. A valid Parks Canada entry pass is required. Dogs are allowed on the trail when kept leashed and under physical control.

Poles help on the sustained climb and loose upper tread. Stay outside the fencing around historic mine vents and foundations, and do not enter them. Bring water, a wind layer and bear spray; treat the upper cirque as exposed mountain terrain. If you continue above the cirque viewpoint, plan and assess that separate option independently.
