Lower Bankhead Interpretive Trail

This short loop drops from the parking lot down about 70 steps to the old Bankhead townsite, then meanders a very gentle, mostly flat 0.7-mile (1.1 km) loop past crumbling foundations, slag piles, and rusting machinery. It’s an easy, family-friendly stroll with lots to look at and read—plan to linger at the interpretive signs. From the overlook by the lot you’ll snag big views of Cascade Mountain (and Mount Rundle on a clear day) before heading down.

Along the loop, you’ll pass the former lamphouse (where miners checked in and out), remnants of a briquette plant, a coal shuttle train, the old transformer building, and tailings—an open-air museum of Banff’s industrial past. The vibe is quiet and a little haunting, especially if you come early.

Bankhead was a company coal town working hard anthracite seams from 1904 to 1922. When the mine shut, the town emptied out. A later national policy ended future logging and mining in the park, sealing Bankhead’s fate as a ghost town. Today’s signage does a great job connecting the ruins you see with the lives that unfolded here and the environmental footprint mining left behind.

If you’re after a quick, low-effort outing that trades alpine miles for rich stories and photogenic ruins, this is a satisfying stop—especially paired with other sights along the Lake Minnewanka road.

• Trail type: loop; total distance 0.7 miles (1.1 km). Allow 30–45 minutes if you read the signs.
• Start with those ~70 stairs; the loop below is flat and easy. Not ideal for wheelchairs or folks who avoid stairs.
• Walk it counterclockwise for a smoother sequence of exhibits.
• No facilities on site—bring water and a snack. Bikes aren’t permitted on the interpretive loop. Dogs are allowed on leash. A valid Parks Canada park pass is required.
• Access is by car or bike; there’s no public transit to the trailhead.
