Sunshine Village Simpson Pass Trail

This is a mellow, high-country walk from Sunshine Village into the broad meadows of Simpson Pass—the saddle that marks the Alberta/British Columbia boundary (and the Banff–Assiniboine park line). Expect big skies, rolling alpine terrain, and a satisfying “straddle the border” moment rather than a dramatic summit finish.

Plan on roughly 7.5 miles total (about 12 km) out-and-back to Simpson Pass, depending on which signed paths you take through Sunshine Meadows. The grade is steady but never brutal, and the trail is well marked. Elevation gain varies by route choice—figure on a moderate climb overall. If you start via the gondola/chairlift, you can tack on quick detours to viewpoints like Standish or Monarch early on for broader panoramas before heading toward the pass.

Scenery is classic subalpine: open meadows dotted with flowers in July and August, intermittent patches of forest, and frequent mountain views. The pass itself is a grassy saddle with boundary markers—geographically cool, visually understated. If you’re chasing bigger vistas, continue beyond the pass toward Healy Pass; hikers report the grand, wide-angle payoffs there. From the Healy Creek junction, it’s about another 1.5 km and ~200 m up to Healy Pass.

Trail conditions can be soggy after rain and around the pass—expect wet feet if you cut across low spots. Weather flips quickly up here, so bring layers and rain gear. Wildlife-wise, keep an eye out for ptarmigan and marmots in the meadows, and possible deer or elk.

Best time to hike: late June through early September when snow is gone and the meadows are in bloom; September can deliver golden larch color with crisper air (and more volatile weather). Sunshine Meadows is popular, but this line to Simpson Pass sees lighter traffic than the core loops—go early or midweek for the quietest experience.

Insider call: Simpson Pass is more about the journey than the destination. If you only have time for one knock-your-socks-off viewpoint, consider extending to Healy Pass or focusing on the Sunshine Meadows lakes/viewpoints circuit for more immediate drama.
