Schärtenalm

Overview

Perched at 1,359 m on the way to Blaueishütte, Schärtenalm is the kind of rustic, family-run alm you hope to find after a steady climb from Hintersee. Expect a classic “Brotzeit” menu, generous cakes, and drinks served on a sunny terrace with big views. It’s a true reward stop on the Ramsau side of the park, not a drive-up café—getting here is half the experience.

Food, vibe, and hours

This is a managed alm (run by the Graßl family) with a small but satisfying selection of snacks, house-made sweets, and drinks. Usual hours run roughly 9:00–17:00, with breakfast available 9:00–10:30 by reservation. A recent note indicates Tuesday is a rest day. Alpine huts can be seasonal—don’t count on winter openings—so always confirm before you set off.

Getting there

Hike up from Ramsau-Hintersee (Seeklause area) on the well-marked trail toward Blaueishütte; parking is available at local trailheads, including Pfeiffenmacherbrücke. Buses from Berchtesgaden serve Ramsau; hop off at stops like Seeklause or the village church to start your walk.

What to expect on the trail

The approach is a solid uphill—intermediate for fit hikers—but never technical if you stick to the signed paths. Bring proper footwear, water, layers, and a rain shell; mountain weather turns fast. There are no toilets on the trail itself. When the hut is open, expect a guest restroom; otherwise plan ahead using public facilities around Hintersee.

Nature notes

You’re walking through a protected slice of the Bavarian Alps. The park’s wildlife roster includes marmots, chamois, ibex, deer, and golden eagles, among many others. Sightings vary, but early and quiet stretches of trail give you the best chance.

Best time to visit

Late spring through autumn is prime, when the path is snow-free and the alm is typically operating. Aim for late morning to early afternoon for food service; breakfast requires a reservation. Avoid Tuesdays if possible (rest day). For softer light and fewer hikers, start early from Hintersee and plan your snack stop right as the terrace opens.

Practicalities

• Cash is king at alpine huts—bring enough for food and drinks.
• Public toilets are available near Ramsau/Hintersee trailheads (e.g., Hintersee Westufer). Use them before you climb; hut facilities are for guests and only during opening hours.
