Overview

A quick, high-reward stroll in the heart of the Chisos Basin, this paved, wheelchair-accessible loop serves up big scenery with minimal effort. The Window View Trail is a short 0.3-mile total loop with about 50 feet of elevation change, and it starts steps from the Chisos Mountains Lodge and the nearby visitor facilities. Don’t confuse it with the much longer and steeper Window Trail—this one is all about an easy lap to a grand overlook.

What You’ll See

The loop circles a low rise to reveal sweeping, 360-degree Chisos Mountains vistas—keep an eye out for Emory Peak and Vernon Bailey Peak on clear days. The star is the park’s famous “Window,” a V-shaped notch that perfectly frames the desert beyond and becomes a glowbox at day’s end. Benches along the route make it easy to linger, and interpretive signs add context about the area’s geology, wildlife, and history. You’ll pass desert flora like agave and prickly pear, with seasonal wildflowers after good rains.

Trail Experience

This is as easy as Big Bend hiking gets: flat, paved, and friendly for strollers and wheelchairs. It’s popular—especially at sunset—so expect company and a bit of jockeying for the prime viewing spots. If you’re after solitude or a workout, this won’t scratch the itch. Also note: this loop does not descend to the pour-off; for that, you’ll need the longer Window Trail.

Best Time to Hike

Open year-round and enjoyable in any season. For the best light and cooler temps, aim for sunrise or golden hour; sunset is the classic moment when the sun drops through the Window, but it’s also the busiest. Spring and fall are most comfortable. Summer heat can feel intense even on a short walk, but the paved surface makes it manageable with water and sun protection.

Tips

  • Arrive a little early for sunset to claim a bench and set up your photo composition.
  • Pack sun protection—shade is limited and the desert sun is unrelenting.
  • Foot traffic only, no pets on park trails. No permit needed for a day walk; your park entrance fee covers it.
  • Want the full Window experience down to the pour-off? Choose the longer Window Trail instead.

Pros

  • Multiple benches perfectly placed for lingering at the Window viewpoint
  • Fully paved, wheelchair-friendly loop with big mountain views in minutes

Cons

  • Sunset crowds can pack the small viewpoint area
  • Scenic but very short; not great if you want a workout or solitude

Parking

Park at the main paved lot in the Chisos Basin by the Lodge/Visitor Center; the signed, paved path to the loop begins directly from the lot.

Caution

Limited shade and high desert sun—bring water and sun protection. Very popular at sunset; arrive early. Don’t confuse this loop with the longer Window Trail to the pour-off. Foot traffic only; no pets on trails.
