Den Fenella track

Overview

A compact, immersive Blue Mountains bushwalk, the Den Fenella Track drops from the Wentworth Falls picnic area into a cool, ferny gully before popping you out at Den Fenella Lookout with sweeping Jamison Valley views. It’s short—about 1 km total out-and-back (return)—but expect plenty of stairs and a noticeable descent/ascent that make it feel punchy for the distance.

What You’ll See

The track funnels quickly into a shaded rainforest-like groove along Den Fenella Creek. Think damp rock, moss, tree roots, and fronds everywhere, with the sound of small cascades following you most of the way. There’s a picturesque stepping-stone creek crossing and, in warmer months, look for delicate native wildflowers on sandstone ledges, including the rare rock sprengelia. The finale is Den Fenella Lookout, a dramatic window over the Jamison Valley—classic escarpment views for minimal time on trail.

Trail Conditions & Logistics

Navigation is straightforward and well signposted from the Wentworth Falls picnic area (near Jamison Lookout). The formed path narrows in places, with pinch points, uneven rock, and several stair runs. Surfaces can be slick with leaf litter or moss, especially after rain. There’s no water or toilets on the track itself, though the picnic area at the trailhead has basic amenities.

Best Time to Hike

This track works year‑round. Spring and early summer bring lush greenery and wildflowers. Autumn is cooler and quieter. After light rain the creek and cascades are especially pretty, but the rock can be slippery—avoid it after heavy rain when the gully can feel treacherous. For photos and a quieter vibe, go early morning or late afternoon.

Tips

• Footwear with good grip is essential; expect damp, slippy sections and lots of steps.
• Bring water—none on track.
• Add it to a longer outing by linking nearby cliff‑top tracks (Undercliff/Overcliff) if you want more mileage without moving the car.
• Jamison Lookout sits right by the start—grab a quick vista before or after.

Who It’s For

If you want maximum Blue Mountains atmosphere—rainforest gully plus a big escarpment view—in minimal time, this is a terrific value walk. It’s not ideal for prams or anyone uneasy with exposure or stairs, but most reasonably fit walkers will enjoy the quick, scenic hit.
