Rocket Point circuit

Overview

This short, historic loop serves up big scenery fast. Starting from the Wentworth Falls picnic area, the Rocket Point Circuit makes a tidy loop of about 2.2–2.4 km (1.3–1.5 mi) with a moderate Grade 3 profile. Expect formed track, plenty of steps, and a bit of adventure at the creek crossing. Most walkers take 45–90 minutes depending on photo stops.

What you’ll see

You’ll first reach the top of Wentworth Falls at Queens Cascade, where a neat set of stepping stones crosses the creek right at the lip of the multi‑tiered waterfall. After the crossing, the track climbs through lush ferny gullies and then opens to heath, finishing at Rocket Point Lookout—arguably the best full‑face vantage of the falls with sweeping Jamison Valley views. Detours to Wentworth Falls, Jamison, or Fletchers Lookouts are easy add‑ons if you want more viewpoints.

Trail notes

The path is well‑made and signposted but does have intersecting tracks—keep an eye on “Rocket Point” signs as you go. Surfaces range from compact dirt to rock and stone steps, and they get slick after rain. This is not suitable for prams or wheelchairs. Weekends can be busy around the main lookouts, but the Rocket Point section itself often feels calmer.

Nature highlights

This is classic Blue Mountains sandstone country—golden escarpments, overhangs, and rock platforms carved by water over time. Shaded gullies host mosses and ferns; higher sections open to heath that pops with wildflowers in spring. Birders should watch and listen for Rainbow Lorikeets and Crimson Rosellas flitting through the canopy.

Best time to hike

Year‑round works. Spring brings the best flower show and comfortable temps. After rain, the falls are thunderous and photos are fantastic—but the track is slick, so tread carefully. In summer, start early to beat heat and crowds; in autumn and winter, expect crisp air and the clearest valley views. Weekday mornings are the sweet spot for parking and quieter lookouts.

Tips

Wear shoes with good grip for the stepping‑stone crossing and the steep stair climb after it. Bring water, a hat, and sunscreen—there are exposed sections. Keep kids close near unfenced drops. If you’ve got extra energy, link this with nearby tracks like the Wentworth Falls or Overcliff‑Undercliff routes. Note that parts of the longer National Pass may be closed at times—check status before planning extensions.
