Furber Steps

Overview

This short, stair-heavy classic drops from the clifftops near Scenic World at Katoomba to the base of Katoomba Falls and the valley-floor junction with Federal Pass. It’s 2.2 km (about 1.4 miles) total, out-and-back, and typically takes 1–2 hours. The distance is modest; the elevation change is not—expect a sustained, leg-burning climb on the return.

What You’ll See

Right from the top you get sweeping Jamison Valley vistas, with the dramatic sandstone escarpment and views across to Mount Solitary. As the route ducks beneath the cliff line, it transitions into cool temperate rainforest with ferny gullies, mossy rock, and the soundtrack of cascades. Detours to lookouts like Vaniman’s Lookout and Juliet’s Balcony add quick, worthwhile photo stops. A highlight is time spent around Katoomba Falls—multi-tiered, often misty, and framed by lush greenery. At the bottom, the steps meet the historic Federal Pass, an old tramway alignment that threads below the cliffs if you want to wander farther.

Trail Feel and Difficulty

The hallmark here is relentless stairs—stone and metal—with handrails in places. It’s steep but straightforward, and well-signed. Surfaces can be wet and slick after rain, especially near the falls and in rainforest sections. Fit hikers will find it a punchy workout; casual walkers can manage it with patience and breaks.

• Simple out-and-back: descend Furber Steps to the Federal Pass junction/Base of Katoomba Falls and return the same way.
• One-way with a lift: many people descend the steps and ride back up on Scenic World’s transport (ticket required) to spare the climb.
• Bigger day out: link Furber Steps with Federal Pass or the Giant Stairway/Three Sisters area for longer circuits.

Geology, Flora, and Wildlife

You’ll be moving through classic Triassic sandstone country—towering cliffs and weathered ledges shaped by water over time. Keep an ear out for lyrebirds and wonga pigeons, and watch the canopy for catbirds and cockatoos. The understorey stays lush near the gullies and falls, with ferns and other rainforest species thriving in the shade and spray.

Best Time to Hike

It’s a year-round walk. Spring and autumn bring milder temperatures and typically stronger waterfall flow—prime conditions. Summer can be humid, but the shaded rainforest helps. Winter offers crisp air and clear views; bring an extra layer.

Logistics and Tips

Park at Scenic World (fees apply) or arrive via Katoomba Station and local buses to the Scenic World/Katoomba Falls precinct. There are amenities at the trailhead, but nothing once you’re on the steps. Wear grippy footwear, and carry water and a snack—the climb back is no joke. If you plan to extend onto valley-floor tracks, a proper map or GPS is wise, and mobile reception in the valley is patchy.
