The Scenic Walkway winds for a total of 1.5 miles (2.4 km) on elevated boardwalk through the lush rainforest on the Jamison Valley floor beneath Katoomba’s cliffs. It’s an easy, curated experience: flat, stable decking, with short loops as quick as 10 minutes or a fuller wander of about an hour. Expect a polished attraction rather than a remote bush track—this is about immersion without impact.

What You’ll See

You’ll move under a cool canopy of towering tree ferns and coachwood, past moss-slicked boulders and filtered light. Interpretive signs pop up throughout, unpacking the valley’s ecology and the region’s coal-mining past. Remnants of the former Katoomba Colliery add texture between fern fronds. Keep an ear out for the mimicry of Superb Lyrebirds scratching through leaf litter, and look for movement in the understory after rain when the forest feels especially alive.

Access and How It Works

Access is via Scenic World’s transport on the clifftop: descend to the valley by the Scenic Railway or the step‑free Cableway, then explore the Walkway. It also links the base stations and connects to longer public tracks in the valley, so if you want to push beyond the boardwalk feel, you can step onto nearby routes like Federal Pass or head toward Furber Steps for a more traditional bushwalk.

For families, first-time visitors, and anyone chasing rainforest atmosphere without the effort, absolutely. The combination of easy access, dense temperate rainforest, and well-placed history panels is a win. This one is good year‑round. Summer brings cool shade; autumn and winter can turn misty and moody. The forest shines after rain, but expect slick decking and take it slow. Go early or late to dodge peak crowds (weekends and school holidays are busiest). The Walkway operates during Scenic World’s hours, typically mid‑morning to late afternoon—plan accordingly.

Tips

Wear shoes with decent grip—boardwalks and steps can be slippery when wet. A light rain jacket is handy; it’s often damp down here even when it’s dry up top. If you want multiple perspectives in one visit, pair the Walkway with the Cableway or Railway descent and consider the Skyway for an aerial view before or after your stroll.
