Echo Point to Scenic World via Giant Stairway

This is a 4.7 km (2.9 mi) one-way walk from Echo Point to Scenic World, with the Three Sisters and Jamison Valley between them. Allow 2–3 hours for the Grade 4 track. From Echo Point, walk about 450 m along Three Sisters Walk to the Giant Stairway, descend more than 800 steel and stone steps, follow Federal Pass toward Katoomba Falls, then climb Furber Steps to the Scenic World cliff top. It is a point-to-point route, not a loop. The official distance is 4.7 km; the connected mapped track is about 4.1 km, so treat the published total as an estimate and allow for variation.

The first major effort is the long descent beside the cliff; the second is the climb back up Furber Steps at the far end. Both are stair sections, and the walk is demanding despite its short mileage. The track is graded very steep with many steps. If heights make you uneasy, take your time on the stairway. Carry water and leave room in your schedule for breaks and photo stops; the suggested walking time is 2–3 hours.

Echo Point gives the broad view across Jamison Valley before you leave the clifftop. The first access stretch follows the Three Sisters Walk to the stairway, where Honeymoon Bridge connects to the first Sister. Once below the escarpment, the view changes: the sandstone pillars rise above you instead of forming the far edge of the panorama. It is worth looking back toward the cliffs as you descend.

After the stairs, the route follows the valley track toward Katoomba Falls and Scenic World. This section trades the open lookout for a sheltered walk among dense forest, ferns and sandstone walls. Katoomba Falls is the natural pause on the way through; from the lower track, you see the waterfall framed by the cliff rather than from the lookout above.

The mapped walking line continues up Furber Steps to Scenic World’s cliff-top access. From the valley station, the Scenic Railway is an alternative to walking that final climb; check its current service and entry arrangements before relying on it. This is still a one-way hike, so arrange a lift between Echo Point and Scenic World or plan a separate return.

Parking is available at both Echo Point and Scenic World, though Echo Point spaces can be limited on busy weekends. Toilets and a kiosk are at Scenic World; don’t count on facilities during the valley walk. Ordinary pets are not permitted in the national park; certified assistance animals are excepted.

The Giant Stairway was built in 1909. Scenic World’s railway began in the 1880s as a coal line, linking the valley floor to the clifftop long before it became a visitor ride. The route follows this steep change in elevation on foot, then reaches that former industrial access at the finish.

The classic composition is from Echo Point, with the Three Sisters above the forested valley. Lower down, Honeymoon Bridge and the stairway give a much closer perspective on the sandstone. The valley and waterfall are the visual reward between those two views.
