Overview

A quick, rewarding stop between mileposts 34 and 35, Yankee Horse Ridge pairs a photogenic little cascade (Wigwam Falls) with a slice of Blue Ridge logging history. It’s a leg-stretcher more than a linger-all-day destination—perfect when you want a nature payoff without a big hike.

Why it’s special

You don’t often get a roadside waterfall and a reconstructed logging railroad in the same spot. The short path leads past rails and ties from the Irish Creek Railway, with interpretive signs that make the area’s early 20th‑century timber story click.

What you’ll see

• Wigwam Falls: a gentle, pretty cascade just a few minutes from your car, best after recent rain.
• Irish Creek Railroad exhibit: a re-created section of track bed right beside the parking area.
• Shaded Appalachian forest: lush in spring, vibrant in fall, with streamside greenery.

The walk

From the parking area, stroll beside the re-created tracks and take the path on the left to reach the falls. The walk is very short and easy—ideal for kids and road-weary legs.

History snapshot

The display here interprets the Irish Creek logging railroad that once hauled timber from these slopes. The rails you see are a re-created segment that helps tell that story with on-site signage.

Nature notes

Expect songbirds and the usual small forest critters; after rains, look for salamanders and frogs near the stream.

Best time to visit

• After rain for the fullest waterfall.
• Spring for wild greens and fall for color.
• Weekdays or early mornings are the calmest. Midday on weekends can draw a crowd, and the small lot fills quickest during peak foliage season.

Good to know

There are no restrooms or services here. A single picnic table and trash receptacles are available; bring your own snacks and pack out anything the bins can’t handle.
