Overview
Prince Albert’s Cairn is a large, pyramid-shaped stone memorial on Balmoral Estate, built by Queen Victoria for her husband after his death. It’s the estate’s largest cairn, reached on foot above Crathie. I’d put it on your list if you enjoy the history and want a hilltop view over Deeside and Balmoral Castle; it’s a proper walk, not a quick roadside stop.

Guide
Start from Crathie, beside the A93, and use the estate’s Prince Albert Pyramid Walk map. The full Balmoral Cairns circuit from there is 9.5 km (6 miles), with 371 m of ascent and an estimated 2.5–3 hours. It visits several cairns, so those figures are for the complete circuit, not a direct return to Albert’s alone. The wider circuit isn’t waymarked, and directions can be confusing. Expect a steep, uneven climb and muddy patches after rain. Wear grippy shoes, bring water, and leave time to take the ascent steadily.
The inscription dedicates the cairn to Albert, the Prince Consort, and dates it to 21 August 1862. Albert died the year before, in 1861. This is a Victorian memorial, not an ancient burial cairn; the pyramid’s size and shape make that story clear as you reach the top.
The woodland approach opens onto a hilltop with broad views over Deeside and Balmoral Castle. Give yourself a few minutes at the top before heading back. For a photo, step far enough down the path to fit the whole pyramid into the frame with some of the surrounding pines, then turn around for the wider estate view.
