Royal Lochnagar Distillery

Royal Lochnagar is a working Highland single-malt distillery and visitor centre at Crathie, about a mile from Balmoral Castle. It is a focused visit for whisky-curious travelers: a guided look at the production rooms followed by a tasting. Book ahead, especially in busy travel periods; this is a separate visit from the castle.

Allow about an hour for a standard guided tour. Guides take you through the mill room, mash house and tun room, then the spirit-safe or warehouse, ending with a tutored tasting. A separate warehouse tasting focuses on casks and does not include the tour, so choose it if tasting is your main interest.

Beggs’ Bothy Bar is part of the visitor centre, with whisky, cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks. Food offerings can change, so check ahead if lunch matters to your plan. The shop sells whisky and gifts.

John Begg founded the distillery in 1845 as New Lochnagar. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited in 1848, after which it gained the Royal name. The distillery itself is named for Lochnagar, a mountain rising more than 3,000 feet in the Cairngorms.

Begg was not the first to try legal distilling here. Earlier Crathie distiller James Robertson’s works were burned by smugglers who opposed legal distilling, before the present site took shape on the Dee’s south bank.

Royal Lochnagar uses two small stills and traditional worm tubs. Long fermentation and slow distillation are part of the method, which gives its whisky a light profile with fruit and gentle spice.
