Trail guide
Balmoral Cairns Walk is a 6-mile (9.5 km) loop from Crathie, following estate roads and tracks before climbing through pinewoods and open hillside to family cairns and Prince Albert’s Pyramid. Allow about 2½–3 hours; the estate map gives 9 km, while the full written circuit is also described as 9.5 km, so plan for roughly six miles. The route gains about 280 m and is moderate, with some steep, rough side paths. It is not waymarked.
From the charged Crathie car park, follow the estate roads and cross the Dee on the suspension bridge before taking the private lane uphill. Respect the cottages along it. In the woods, the rough spur to Princess Helena’s Cairn is easy to miss and steep; visit the other cairns by short side paths, then return to the junctions as the route requires. The path to Prince Arthur’s Cairn is faint, so keep track of the main line before continuing toward Princess Alice’s Cairn. After Alice, follow the grassy tracks to the gate and main track, then take the steep path up to the Pyramid. Its descent leads past Princess Beatrice’s Cairn and back to the road for Crathie.
The family cairns commemorate events in Balmoral’s history. Purchase Cairn marks Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s 1852 purchase of the estate, and Princess Louise’s Cairn commemorates her 1871 marriage. Prince Albert’s Pyramid was erected after his death; its inscription is dated 21 August 1862. Route lists count the cairns and related memorials differently, so expect a chain of named monuments rather than one fixed tally.
Purchase Cairn looks down Deeside, Prince Leopold’s Cairn overlooks Balmoral Castle, and Prince Arthur’s Cairn has another outlook over the valley. The large stone Pyramid is the signature stop: the climb is short but steep, and the descent path is better formed. The hillside clearing gives the monument room in a photograph; pause there without blocking the narrow path.
