This mesa-top viewpoint sits along the 2.4-mile Slickrock Foot Trail loop in the Needles District. The route stays high, so you’re earning wide-open vistas the whole way rather than hiking in a canyon. Most hikers tackle it counterclockwise to hit the majority of viewpoints in a satisfying progression and save the best for last.

What You'll See

Expect panorama after panorama: Big Spring Canyon and Little Spring Canyon yawning below, Needles formations punctuating the skyline, and distant mountain ranges on clear days. It’s classic slickrock underfoot—firm, grippy sandstone with cairns marking the way—so the views are almost continuous instead of just a final payoff.

The Viewpoints (Why Keep Going)

There are four marked viewpoints. The first is a warm-up; don’t judge the hike by it. Views expand as you continue, with the fourth outlook generally considered the showstopper over Big Spring Canyon. Stay on the signed route—beyond the viewpoints the open rock is tempting, but it’s easy to stray if you leave the cairns.

Wildlife & Nature Notes

Keep an eye on the cliffs and skies for raptors. In spring, you may catch wildflowers dotting the sandstone. Bighorn sheep and coyotes are possible in this area, but consider them lucky sightings rather than guarantees.

Best Time to Visit

Because the trail is fully exposed, start early to beat the heat, especially in warmer months. This spot typically sees manageable crowds compared to the Needles’ busier trailheads, but mornings are still the smoothest experience. Late-day light can be beautiful, but plan water and sun protection accordingly.

Know Before You Go

• The loop is well marked with cairns, but pay attention near the final viewpoint where people sometimes miss a turn.
• Dogs aren’t allowed on this trail (service animals excepted).
• No amenities on site: bring plenty of water and everything you need for a few hours out on open rock.
