Guide
The arch stands beside taller sandstone towers. Look for its low, shoe-like shape, then widen your view to take in the layered mesa and open country around it. Because the feature is far away, it can look small in a wide phone photo; a tighter zoom or binoculars help bring out the outline.
The sandstone here began forming about 300 million years ago, when an ancient sea and salt basin covered the region. Streams carried iron-rich red sediment from the ancestral Rocky Mountains, while sand bars and coastal dunes left lighter, quartz-rich layers. That contrast gives the Needles its bands of red and pale rock.
Buried salt shifted under pressure and fractured the sandstone. Rain and repeated freezing and thawing widened those cracks, gradually shaping fins, spires and arches. Wooden Shoe Arch formed only thousands of years ago in sandstone hundreds of millions of years older. Its name comes from the familiar shape it suggests, not from a historic wooden shoe or structure.
