The Needles Campground

The Needles Campground is a 26-site developed campground at the end of the main park road in Canyonlands’ Needles district, among Utah juniper, pinyon pine and red sandstone. Use it as a base for the district’s longer hikes and four-wheel-drive routes toward Chesler Park, the Joint Trail, Druid Arch and Confluence Overlook. It makes most sense for an overnight stay; this is a place to settle in, not a quick viewpoint stop.

There’s no food service, store or other supplies at the campground, and cell coverage is unreliable. The nearest place for food and supplies is Monticello, about an hour away. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring, but there are no showers, electrical hookups or dump station. Potable water and flush toilets are seasonal; vault toilets are available year-round. Bring your own provisions rather than counting on services at camp.

The campground has two loops. Loop A is first-come, first-served and open year-round; Loop B takes reservations seasonally and closes in winter. Every site has a picnic table and fire ring. Most sites limit the combined vehicle and trailer length to 28 feet, and none has hookups. Trees add shade at some sites, but it varies. Two accessible sites are in Loop A, with an accessible toilet between them; speed bumps on the campground road can make wheelchair travel difficult.

Take UT-211 west from US-191 for roughly 35 miles, then continue about three miles on the main park road. UT-211 is the only paved road into and out of the Needles district. The roads and campsites aren’t lit, so arrive before dark if you can; finding your loop and site is easier with daylight.

The Needles district sits at about 4,900 feet in high desert. Utah juniper and pinyon pine grow among its red rock, with prickly pear, yucca and other desert wildflowers appearing in spring. The district takes its name from the colorful spires of Cedar Mesa Sandstone that shape this part of the park.
