Overview
A mellow 0.8–1.0 mile loop tucked off Race Point Road, Beech Forest is where quiet woodland meets mirror‑calm ponds. It’s the perfect leg‑stretch: mostly flat hard‑packed sand and boardwalk with one brief, steep stair climb over a dune. Plan 30–60 minutes and bring a camera—lilies, reflections, and birds steal the show.
What You’ll See
The trail skirts Blackwater Pond and Beech Forest Pond, with lily pads drifting in the coves and beech woods adding shade and birdsong. Best pond views pop right near the parking area and along the west side; there’s even a small dock that’s great for water‑lily photos.
Route Tips
The loop forms a figure‑8. Two trailheads start at the far end of the parking loop. Going counterclockwise from the east side gives you quick boardwalk over Blackwater Pond before sandy stretches. About 0.1 mile in, ignore two unmarked paths heading to Race Point Road—stay left to remain on the loop. Around 0.4 mile, a signed center shortcut lets you skip the steep section. If you continue, you’ll cross a short but very steep dune via stairs, then meander back through vegetated dunes. Near the end on the west side, look for the short spur to the dock.
Logistics
There’s a free, large loop parking lot at the trailhead and a picnic area. Seasonal restrooms are located here, but availability fluctuates—have a backup plan (nearby visitor centers or in‑town facilities). Seating on the trail is very limited. You can reach the lot from the Province Lands Bike Trail, but no bikes are allowed on the Beech Forest Trail itself. Dogs aren’t permitted on designated nature trails in the Seashore.
Wildlife & Conditions
Expect mosquitoes in warm months and the usual Cape Cod trio of ticks, biting flies, and poison ivy. Wear long pants and use repellent. Birding is the headline act here, especially in spring and fall, when migration brings extra activity around the ponds and edges.
Best Time to Visit
Spring and fall are prime: cooler temps, fewer bugs, and better birding. Early mornings are quieter and offer glassy reflections on the ponds; breezy days also help keep mosquitoes down. In summer, go early or late for softer light and lighter crowds—and to avoid the midday bug peak.
