Lion’s Tail

Overview

Lion’s Tail is a standout cave formation on the self-guided Big Room route. True to its name, it’s a long, slender stalactite ending in a knobby, fluffy-looking tip—one of those features people remember long after they surface.

What You’ll See

You’ll spot it from the paved pathway that circles the Big Room, amid a forest of stalactites, stalagmites, columns, draperies, and cave pools. Even in a chamber overflowing with formations, this one’s distinctive shape holds its own.

Where It Is

It’s along the main Big Room loop inside Carlsbad Cavern, so you’ll pass it if you walk the standard route. No special tour or detour required.

Photography

The lighting down here is low and can be tough on cameras. Expect better results with a device that handles dim conditions well; the formation is more striking in person than on most snapshots.

Best Time to Visit

Whenever you’re doing the Big Room loop during normal cave hours. Lighting is fixed (it’s underground), so your biggest win is giving yourself time—don’t rush past it.

Tips for Enjoying It

• Slow down and look up—many of the best features, including Lion’s Tail, are overhead or at eye level.
• Move quietly; sound carries in the cavern and the hush adds to the experience.
• Wear sturdy shoes; paths can be damp.
