Natural Entrance Amphitheater

Overview

Perched beside the gaping mouth of the cave, the Natural Entrance Amphitheater is the park’s gathering place for the famed evening bat flight and the jump-off point for descending the Natural Entrance Trail. It’s equal parts wildlife theater and dramatic gateway into the underground.

What You’ll See

• The cavern’s Natural Entrance below the seating, with paved switchbacks plunging immediately into the dim cave.
• Wide views over the Chihuahuan Desert rim area near the entrance while you wait.

Bat Flight Program

This is the place to watch thousands of free‑tailed bats spiral out at dusk in summer and early fall. Rangers give engaging talks beforehand, and the experience is intentionally quiet—phones and photography are not allowed during the flight, which actually makes the moment more immersive. The bat flight program is free to attend.

Hiking Context

Right below the amphitheater, the Natural Entrance Trail begins a sustained, steep, paved descent—about 1.2 miles and roughly 800 feet down to reach the Big Room. Lighting drops quickly past the opening, so let your eyes adjust. Many visitors opt to hike down and take the elevator back up.

Best Time to Visit

• For bat flight: arrive 45–60 minutes before sunset to get a seat and catch the ranger program.
• For starting the descent: some visitors report fewer people beginning down mid‑afternoon, but there’s a last‑entry cutoff for the Natural Entrance—plan ahead.

Practical Info

• Expect a tough downhill on knees; wear sturdy shoes and bring water.
• Bring a small cushion for the stone seating.
• Restrooms and interpretive exhibits are by the amphitheater; broader services are up by the visitor center.
• Pets aren’t allowed here or on the trail; kennel services are available nearby.
• In the cave, it’s cooler and lighting is subdued; no food and only water is allowed.
