More about National Park Visitor Centre, Haytor

National Park Visitor Centre, Haytor is a compact information centre in the lower car park at Haytor Vale, around three miles west of Bovey Tracey on Dartmoor’s eastern edge. It sits beside the routes into the Haytor area, with the rocks, old quarries and Granite Tramway close enough to shape the day. Inside, there’s an information desk and gift-shop counter. Visitors mention maps, books, leaflets and Dartmoor gifts, along with useful local advice, so this is a good place to get your bearings before picking a walk.

I’d make a short stop here if you’re new to this side of the moor or choosing between a walk to the rocks, the quarry paths and the tramway. If you already know where you’re going, the centre itself is small and the main experience is outside. It works best as a practical first stop, not as an indoor attraction to fill a long stretch of the day.

Choose a walk that suits youThe Haytor Rocks are a separate landmark, a short walk from the centre rather than something…

The Haytor Rocks are a separate landmark, a short walk from the centre rather than something you’ll see from the counter. The centre is also well placed for old quarry paths and the Granite Tramway. For a specific route, the Miles Without Stiles walk to Haytor Quarry is 2 km there and back, with a shorter 1 km return option that turns around at the quarry entrance. The mapped route starts at the middle car park; signed paths from the centre’s lower car park connect to it after a road crossing.

The track climbs gently at first, then gets narrower and steeper through the quarry. If that rougher section isn’t right for you, the entrance makes a clear turning point. Beyond the quarry, the old tramway gives you a viewpoint over the moor. This is a useful spot to ask about the route before setting off, but remember that reaching the quarry and tor means leaving the car park and walking across open ground.

Follow the granite storyThere’s more to the quarry walk than a look at a big rock.

There’s more to the quarry walk than a look at a big rock. Haytor granite was worked here and carried to Teignmouth docks on a tramway that opened in 1820. The same hard granite was used for Nelson’s Column. That history is easier to picture when you see the quarries and the old route through the landscape, rather than reading the names from a map. The sheltered quarry is a natural place to pause before continuing to the tramway viewpoint.

The route also crosses open moorland where curlew, skylark and meadow pipit nest on the ground. Cuckoos are often heard here in spring. Those birds are a possibility, not a guarantee, but they give you another reason to keep an eye on the grass and listen as you walk.

Practical detailsThe lower car park is right beside the centre.

The lower car park is right beside the centre. Parking is paid, and there are separate middle and upper car parks for other walks in the Haytor area. The centre entrance is step-free with automatic doors, and level access continues inside. There’s a hearing loop at the information counter. Two marked Blue Badge spaces are about 20 metres from the entrance; the access information describes an even surface and also lists a 10 percent gradient on the approach, so check that incline if it matters for your visit.

Public male and female toilets are in the block to the left of the building, with one adapted toilet near the entrance. Baby-changing facilities are available there too. Two 7 kW Type 2 charging sockets are outside. The centre keeps reduced opening days in winter, so check its current seasonal schedule before planning around the shop or information desk.
