Spinster’s Rock is a Neolithic portal dolmen in a field near Shilstone on Dartmoor’s northeastern side. Three upright stones, each about 2 metres high, hold a granite capstone as much as 5 metres long and 3 metres wide; the structure rises about 3.5 metres. This is a focused stop to see one unusual prehistoric structure, rather than a longer walk with several destinations.

Portal dolmens were funerary and ceremonial monuments, with dated examples built between 3500 and 2600 BC. The familiar tale that three spinsters raised the capstone before breakfast is folklore, not established history. The stones collapsed in 1862 and were re-erected ten months later. A notch cut into one upright now helps support the capstone; iron bars and buried granite slabs were also added to steady the structure. Its present arrangement includes that restoration, rather than being untouched since prehistory.

From the signed gate, follow the public right of way across the field to reach the monument; the defining view takes that short walk, not a stop from the lane. Parking is limited at the side of the lane, and the last approach runs along very narrow country roads. Up close, look at how the broad capstone rests across all three uprights, with the repaired supports part of the story.
